Isabella Amezquita, a swimmer for the Woodrow Aquacats, received the scholarship from the Live Local Group, a team affiliated with Coldwell Banker Realty.

Applicants from Woodrow Wilson, Bryan Adams and Lake Highlands high schools were required to submit an essay about how they promoted kindness in their communities. The team selected 12 finalists, and the winner was announced at a check presentation event. The other finalists received gift cards for their submissions.

“We received so many beautiful and moving entries, it was hard to pick, but we are excited to grow this as an annual event and continue supporting our local students,” the group said in a statement. “We want to continue spreading the message that kindness helps to strengthen our communities.”

The group previously raised $9,000 and filled a 24-foot truck with food for the peace pantries in the Woodrow Wilson feeder pattern.
