A ministry that works to provide affordable housing for the elderly donated $80,000 to two East Dallas organizations that advocate for LGBT people.
Ministry with the Aging Inc. used proceeds from the sale of Cathedral Garden Apartments in East Dallas to present a $30,000 check to the Coalition for Aging LGBT and a $50,000 check to the Resource Center, Dallas Voice reported.
A board member for Ministry with the Aging, which is operated as a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas, said Cathedral Garden needed renovation the nonprofit could not afford. The organization sold the property to a national group that will improve the units and maintain the property as affordable senior housing, according to Dallas Voice.
Seven other local organizations that facilitate affordable senior housing also received donations.
Resource Center CEO Cece Cox told Dallas Voice that she will use the donation to plan activities for the Gray Pride senior support group. The group receives counseling for coming out, loss, anxiety and depression.
The donation at Coalition for Aging will be used to expand the North Texas LGBT-Friendly Senior Housing Guide that rates senior living properties. The publication evaluates properties based on LGBT inclusiveness, employment policies, marketing and competency training.
With the donation, the organization can hire a part-time researcher, provide resource materials and increase social engagement.
