The Board of Adjustment appeal addresses city code 10.125(b) which requires landscaping buffers between residential and non-residential areas.

Construction for Alexan Cathedral Arts followed the sale of four acres of property to Trammell Crow Residential. The addition of the apartments on the block is intended to create a mixed-use environment and bring new retail options to Old East Dallas.

“In our case, this does not make sense for the church to remove parking and reconfigure drive aisles to put up landscape buffers between the church and the new apartments,” said the Rev. Robert Price, the dean of St. Matthew’s Cathedral.

The centerpiece of the project is intended to be the Cathedral Green. The space will host concerts, art exhibitions, weddings and other events but depends on the approval of the Board of Adjustment appeal.

The changes to the St. Matthew’s site are intended to revitalize and renovate the cathedral’s historic campus.

According to the cathedral’s website, “With the proceeds from the sale of the land, the Cathedral will be able to renovate the historic Garrett Hall.” Renovating Garrett Hall will allow offices to relocate and create space for a preschool on the church grounds.

The public hearing for the appeal is scheduled for Aug. 17. Updates can be tracked with case number BDA223-071.
