Over the past few days, crews have been working at the old Dixie House space at 6400 Gaston Ave. You know the one. It’s the space with the clock. In the past, it housed Sugarbacon Proper Kitchen and Kozy Kitchen.

So we looked into it.

We found a certificate of occupancy application for a restaurant without drive-in service: Sweetgreen.

The CO hasn’t been awarded yet; it’s still pending inspection. You can see it here.

We reached out to Sweetgreen, a restaurant specializing in salads and bowls, to confirm its plans to open in our neighborhood.

Here’s what they told us:

We also know a building permit was issued in October for an interior remodel at the space. Sweetgreen is named on that document, too.

Sweetgreen opened its first location in Washington, D.C. in August 2007. The chain expanded to Texas in 2019 with a store in Houston, and another one opened in Austin in 2020. Dallas’ first Sweetgreen opened in Uptown this year. When plans were announced for the spot on McKinney, the company said it was planning to open other locations throughout the metroplex, but it didn’t list specific places.

The Lakewood Shopping Center restaurant would join a host of other nearby eateries, including a few healthy, fast-casual options such as Unleavened Fresh Kitchen and Cava, which replaced Zoe’s Kitchen earlier this year.

Editor’s note: This story has been corrected to clarify that The Black-Eyed Pea was not located at Lakewood Shopping Center. Dixie House was open in our neighborhood for decades and closed in 2016. It was in the Black-eyed Pea family of restaurants, which was later purchased by Restaurants Acquisition I, LLC, which filed for bankruptcy in 2015.Â
