Next week, neighbors will swarm the streets in red, white and blue for the annual Lakewood Fourth of July Parade, but this year is special. It marks the 50th anniversary of the parade in our neighborhood.
Organizers are celebrating with the theme, “Lakewood Makes History,” which people can interpret however they like – perhaps by dressing in their favorite retro garb. The event began in 1964 with just three families, riding their decorated bikes for a couple of homes in the 7300 block of Lakewood Boulevard. Read more about it in our July issue, which features an adorable vintage photo of one of the parade originators, Annette “Mike” Locklear-Dunton.
The parade begins at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 4, at Lakewood Boulevard and Cambria. Start the day early with the Fun Run at 8 a.m. The $10 entry fee gets you a free T-shirt.
