Lakewood Ladies, a neighborhood women’s organization on Facebook, has raised more than $1,600 for the family of a slain 26-year-old woman who was once thought to be missing at White Rock Lake.

The campaign started Feb. 19, about two weeks after Weltzin Garcia went missing from her Grand Prairie home. Authorities traced her phone to White Rock Lake, where they later found the body of her boyfriend Alfonso Roderick.

A kayaker found Garcia’s body April 3 in Mountain Creek Lake in southwest Dallas. Police said they believe Roderick strangled Garcia then dumped her in the lake, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The couple had two children, who are being cared for by the victim’s twin sister, Atziry Mireles. Funds from the GoFundMe will be used to support Garcia’s children. Organizer Annie Smith said the group’s other focus is helping Mireles navigate adoption, legal representation, life insurance, social security benefits and therapy for the kids.

As of Friday afternoon, the campaign had raised $1,600 of a $5,000 goal. Smith said her group of White Rock-area women has raised an additional $400 from other donations for a total of $2,000.
