A jiu jitsu studio with a funny name is opening on Bryan Street in the retail space where House of Dang used to be. Tiny Killer Robot Jiu Jitsu is opening Nov. 1.

Lakewood resident Rob Ables is opening the studio after 15 years working for other studios. He doesn’t have investors and is doing it all on his own, including a 26-day renovation of the space.

The studio will specialize in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a grappling style of fighting that is used in the UFC. Ables says he might add boxing classes later. The studio will offer adult classes five days a week and children’s classes four days a week. For the rest of the year, a monthly membership is $100 for adults and $80 for children, and members get unlimited access to classes. There is no sign-up fee, but students must buy uniforms, which cost between $50 and $200, Ables says.

He says children as young as 5 can take classes there. "I train people to have more confidence and have fun and work on our goals," he says.
