Yesterday we heard rumors of a mess with the students’ schedules at DISD middle school J.L. Long. Apparently scores of students’ schedules came out wrong, because of glitches in a new database system called Chancery that DISD is using. It seems that students have received schedules, for example, with three PE classes, no sixth period classes, or schedules missing the appropriate level classes, sixth graders put in eighth-grade courses, and the like.

I spoke with an involved J.L. Long parent, Kim Westerbeck, yesterday who confirmed that “yes, things were chaotic” at the school and that in fact she was, at the time I spoke with her in route back to the middle school campus to help out a girl whose parents weren’t available to personally advocate for her. Westerbrook, who has two children of her own at the school was admittedly frustrated, but said she was trying to remain hopeful that things will improve soon.
