Here’s an interesting tidbit from the J.L. Long Middle School newsletter, talking about a link between the school and the State Fair of Texas.

“Few people know that J.L. Long Middle School and the Texas State Fair Hall of State building have something in common. In 1934, students watched as well-known local Dallas artist from the era, artist Olin Herman Travis (1888-1975), painted the “Food” mural in the school library. It was one of the WPA arts projects produced in Dallas during the Depression. Mr. Travis is also known for two murals he painted in the Hall of State at Fair Park.

“When visiting the State Fair this year, take a look at the massive murals in that building and feel fre to stop by the J.L. Long library and ask Mrs. Freiheit, the school librarian, who has the entire history of the mural and artist there at the school library.”

You still have a few days to visit the Fair before it ends this Sunday, Oct. 23. Also in the Hall of State building is a collection of historic Texas artifacts, including Jim Bowie’s knife and plenty of other authentic Texas treasures.
