Ordinarily, Preservation Dallas’ annual list of historic buildings and neighborhoods that are in danger of going away include a couple from around here (two last year and two in 2005). But this year, East Dallas is mostly missing from the list.

Does this mean we finally understand the value of historic preservation, and are willing to do what’s necessary to save what should be saved? Or does it mean that we have already screwed up, and everything worth saving is gone? I don’t know the answer. We’ve had success, of course. But every time I drive past Mockingbird and Greenville and see an ugly apartment building and a grocery store where the truly historic Dr Pepper plant used to be, I wonder.
