Stop. Don’t send Dad another mindless e-card this Father’s Day. In fact, why send him a card at all when you can send him a quirky can of fun? That’s a question neighborhood resident Donald Wood wants you to ask yourself. Wood is the inventor of In-A-Can Greetings. Visitors to his website, inacangreetings.com, can choose from several cans bearing special messages and containing a little gift, then type a personal message and In-A-Can takes care of shipping and handling. Wood and his brainchild are up for a guest appearance on CNBC’s “The Big Idea” with Donnie Deutsch. Perhaps the most intriguing thing about this company is the history of its founder. Before Wood became an entrepreneur, he says, his life was in the proverbial can. He says he was living in homeless shelters, drinking and suffering serious health complications. “I’d really let my life got to hell in a hand basket,” he says. Such hopelessness, however, led Wood to evaluate his so-called “sheltered” existence and turn things around. “I had to give up my favorite food groups: salt, fat, liquor and nicotine,” Wood says. It took years and heart surgery to get his physical health back on track. But with a clear head, renewed hope and some inheritance money, Wood says he was able to make his can concept a reality.
