If you think life’s a beach in Lakewood at the parade on July Fourth, you ought to be in Hawaii on the seventh.

Commander Kenyon Hiser (’76), who grew up on the parade route, Lakewood Boulevard, is to be installed as the Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Paul Hamilton DDG 60. The ceremony will be held aboard the ship at Foxtrot 13 Pier, Ford Island in Pearl Harbor.

Kenyon learned to sail on White Rock Lake and at his family’s summer compound at Lake Michigan. As midshipman scoring highest in proficiency in the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1980, he led June week maneuvers in Chesapeake Bay. He was accorded the honor of flying the flag of his home sate on the lead ship. The Wildcat contingent was proud to see the Lone Star flag flying at that time and another crew plans to fly to Kenyon’s latest triumph next week.

The last time Kenyon’s Woodrow friends made a trip to see him was at his Valentine’s marriage of Margaret Lyle in 1996. Newport, San Diego and Norfolk have been other destinations for these Cats. We especially liked Monterey, where his address was One Surf Way (On the Beach).

Among those expected to attend this fete are his Phi Beta Kappa parents, James and Marigold Hiser, his sister Miriam (’79), a San Francisco attorney and brother Bill (’83), a fellow in cardiology at Creighton in Omaha (where wife, Mimi, also attends law school). Unfortunately, sister Tracy (’81) will be in Europe with her British beau.

Among the others are close friends Joe Sholden (’76) and family, also Taffy Ehrhardt (’77) and family.

We can all feel patriotic and proud on Independence Day. Kenyon is well on his way to becoming Woodrow’s second Admiral, after Kenneth Woodfin (’42). As they say on “Star Trek”: “Make it so.”
