A three-alarm fire broke out early Tuesday morning at a three-story apartment complex at 1615 John West Road, west of Texas State Highway Loop 12/North Buckner Boulevard.

Dallas Fire-Rescue units were dispatched just after 4 a.m., responding to a 911 caller who reported seeing smoke at the apartments. Upon arriving at the scene, the first responders saw fire coming out of the roof of one of the apartment buildings, Dallas Fire-Rescue Public Information Officer Jason L. Evans said in a statement.

“It’s unclear whether fire conditions allowed for an offensive attack; but if so, those efforts were short-lived, as a second alarm request was made early on (at 4:16 a.m.), and suppression efforts became defensive,” Evans said. “A third alarm was dispatched at 5:12 a.m. for manpower only.”

It took about 60-70 firefighters almost two hours to extinguish the flames just before 6 a.m. No injuries were reported.

“Damage to the building was quite significant, but it was not so bad that anything had to be torn down,” Evans said. “The building was left in the hands of apartment management.”

The apartment building on fire contained 12 units, but only five were occupied. Evans said the American Red Cross was notified to help the residents of the five occupied apartments.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
