Neighbors visit White Rock Lake for many a reason, though its tranquility and natural beauty make it uniquely well-suited for deep contemplation. Big life decisions are often made around the lake, whether it is speeding by on a bicycle or a slow walk with the dog. Wouldn’t it be great if there was someone at the lake that was ready to hear about life’s quandaries and give direction?

Years ago, Advocate spoke with the two men who became local celebrities for offering free advice alongside our local lake. In 1996, with a desire to improve his communication skills, Neal Caldwell put down a blanket near T.P. Hill at White Rock Lake with a “Free Advice” sign, and was joined by his friend Roderick McElwain. They didn’t claim to be experts, but became an institution at the lake. MacElwain takes the more practical approach while Caldwell is more poetic, providing a balance for their clients.
