Rock Groups
Beginning in February and continuing through next fall, the Staples of Life Foundation will be organizing and training relay teams to sponsor for the 1999 White Rock Marathon. The teams will consist of: (1) a survivors of cancer/serious illness runners and walkers relay team; (2) a “In memory of” and “In honor of” those with cancer/serious illness runners and walkers relay team; and (3) a “The Family Rock” teams made up of the cancer/serious illness survivor and their family members and/or friends. The Foundation wants to stress that this is not for competition, but for self gratification – runners and walkers are equal! Participants will have a nutritionist, massage therapist, doctor and RN to help with the training process. If you’re ready to join a “Rock Group,” call 972-380-7320.
Know When To Fold ‘Em
On Feb. 13, 2:30 p.m., kids can learn how to make origami—fish and more—at the Skillman Southwestern Branch Library. The program is designed for children in the first grade and older. (Remember to ask the librarian for information on the Kids Fun Club.) Other programs for February will include a fashion/trunk show presented by members of the Wearartists organization and the Dallas Handweavers & Spinners Guild, Feb. 27, from 3-4 p.m. On Feb. 10, 6 p.m., the Adult Book Club will discuss “A Year in Provence” by Peter Mayle. (New members are welcome.) And each Tuesday brings special programs for children. At 10 a.m., children age 18-36 months can share special songs, stories and rhymes with their parents, and at 10:40 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. similar activities are offered by three to six-year-olds.
Cover Dog
Animal overpopulation continues to be a problem in our area. To promote the importance of spay/neuter programs, Nixon’s Top Dog in Casa Linda Plaza is joining another Dallas pet store in holding a city-wide contest to see just exactly who is “Top Dog” around here. To enter, submit a photo of your comely canine along with a 100-word essay (extolling the virtues of Fido or Prince) by Feb. 28 to: Top Dog Contest; 381 Casa Linda Plaza, Box 137; Dallas TX 75218. The winner (we mean the dog) will be on the April cover of “City and Country Pets,” and will have the honor of having a dog treat named after him or her for life. The lucky owner gets a $250 gift certificate good at any Canine Commissary.
Learning Your Place
The February meeting of the Vickery Place Neighborhood News will celebrate the past and the future of their neighborhood on the occasion of their 17th anniversary. If you’d like to learn more about this historic part of Dallas, the gathering will take place on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Vickery Towers at Belmont and Greenville. The group will also be discussing their plans for 1999, including the planning district, the Belmont tree planting and their home tour. The Advocate hopes that all of you made a New Years’ resolution to learn more about your own neighborhood association, to pay your 1999 dues and to be as active in your part of East Dallas as possible this year.
