Officer Nick Novello is a 29-year Dallas police veteran who has been a beat cop in East Dallas since 2007.

He’s making headlines today because he spoke at a meeting in a Fort Worth restaurant Sunday in support of legalizing marijuana.

His argument, basically, is that the “war on drugs” does more harm than good. The government would be better off regulating marijuana, as it regulates alcohol and tobacco, he says.

The Dallas Morning News quoted him:

“I don’t have all the answers for the war on drugs. [But] gangs and drug cartel control all narcotics by default.”

Novello accused three fellow officers of misconduct in 2007. The officers were fired, and they later sued Novello.
