DrsThis weekend Dr. Alan Miller, chief of Oncology and medical director of Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas, and several other doctors are diving into their jobs – literally – to support Swim Across America (SAA), an open water swim that will benefit the Innovative Clinical Trials Center (ICTC) at Baylor Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas.

“The Baylor Salmons,” the team headed by Miller and Dr. Carlos Becerra, director of the Innovative Clinical Trials Center, will join JaNeene Jones, vice president of oncology for Baylor Health Care System, and numerous employees of the Cancer Center, to swim in the Swim Across America – Dallas event, which will be to be held Saturday, June 8, 2013, at The Harbor at Lake Ray Hubbard.

“Through SAA, we can take an activity that we are so passionate about and use it to help others,” said Miller.

Not only do the doctors spend time outside of their busy work schedules to train for the swim, they also are raising money for the cause. This year, the team has set a goal to raise $25,000 and have currently raised more than $21,000. Last year, the team raised more than $21,000 for SAA.

Every member of the team will swim in the ½, 1, or 2-mile course and is encouraged to swim in honor of a cancer survivor or someone who has lost their battle with the disease. This year, Miller is swimming to honor a friend and former colleague who was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer more than fourteen years ago.
