Dallas Animal Services has observed cases of distemper virus in live and deceased raccoons across the city, the organization warned Tuesday.
The neighborhoods surrounding White Rock Lake, Love Field and north of Downtown Dallas have seen significant clusters of diseased raccoons, DAS said, although cases have been recorded throughout Dallas.
The disease spreads easily from wildlife to pets, and DAS said the recent uptick in cases means dog owners should ensure their pets are vaccinated and up to date on their boosters for canine distemper virus (CDV).
“Until your dog is up to date on their vaccines, we also advise dog owners to limit exposure to dog parks and wooded areas,” a statement from Dallas Animal Services said.
According to DAS, canine distemper virus is a highly contagious disease that can cause severe and sometimes fatal respiratory, gastrointestinal, and neurological issues.
