Happy holidays, District 2, to you and your families. I hope we can all take some time to reflect on this year and all the joys and successes it has brought. It has been an honor to see how we have overcome the challenges of the past two years. I am hoping this holiday season feels as extra special to you all as it does to me.

Announcing clean school buses

As part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean School Bus program, Dallas ISD will be receiving 25 new electric school buses. As one of the 13 Texas districts selected for the EPA program, Dallas ISD will receive over $7 million to fund the buses and build the necessary infrastructure. From using 100% compostable plates and trash bags by 2027 and ensuring that schools use renewable energy sources, to piloting zero-emissions school buses in our fleet, we are ensuring that Dallas ISD leaves a smaller environmental footprint. I am excited for our students to benefit from this wonderful program and for our district’s commitment to working toward a greener earth.

Inclement weather procedures

With the winter months comes the potential for inclement weather, and it is important to know the district’s policy. In the event of inclement weather, the decision to open or close schools will be made no later than 6 a.m. on the day in question and communicated as soon as possible to parents/guardians and staff via local radio and television broadcasts, automated phone calls, a posting on the district’s website, and a recorded message on the district’s information line, (972) 925-3700. Once schools are open for the day, classes are held for the entire school day so as not to inconvenience working parents or disrupt the learning environment.

Meals will be available during the winter break

From Thursday, Dec. 22, through Friday, Jan. 6, Dallas ISD will be closed for winter break. However, to ensure that all our students have access to nutritious food during this time, some schools will provide free meals for children younger than 18 and students up to 21 with disabilities. To learn more about the dates and the list of participating schools, visit www.dallasisd.org/FCNS.
