Based on the many stories we’ve reported about volunteers in our neighborhood, we know that when it comes to crime watch and associated pro bono work, there is some heavy competition for Volunteer of the Year, not that any of these altruistic souls do it for the recognition.

Nonetheless, if you know someone who deserves some — recognition, that is — let the Dallas Police Department know about it. Fill out the nomination form, which you can also find here, or call Officer Bervin Smith at 214.670.7747. Deadline for submission is Feb. 20. A recognition ceremony will be held in March.

By the way, I read about this on the DPD Facebook page. To learn more about how the police and other neighborhood organizations are using social media, check out our January cover story — all about the way new technology is impacting neighborhoods.
