The President and Laura Bush are looking for a house somewhere around here, according to a story in The New York Times this morning. Lakewood, maybe?

"We’ll have a nice place in Dallas," the president tells former Texas Monthly writer Robert Draper for a new book about Mr. Bush’s presidency and post-White House plans. (Draper shared excerpts of the book with The Times.)

The Bushes will be able to afford something nice. According to The Times, Mr. Bush told Mr. Draper that after he leaves office, “I’ll give some speeches, just to replenish the ol’ coffers. … I don’t know what my dad gets — it’s more than 50-75 thousand dollars a speech … [and] Clinton’s making a lot of money.”

The last time the Bushes lived here, before he was elected governor, they lived in the Preston Hollow area. The twins attended Preston Hollow Elementary, and Laura was a volunteer there. They could return there, of course, and the Park Cities is a possibility, given the all-but-certainty that the Bush Library will be close by on the SMU campus.

But what’s to stop one of our great real estate agents from interesting the First Family in a Lakewood gem? Or one with a White Rock view? I see a business opportunity here.

Of course, whether the rest of us want a 24-hour Secret Service presence in the neighborhood, or potential protests, that’s another story.

(By the way, Mr. Draper’s book, "Dead Certain," goes on sale Tuesday.)
