Casa View Shopping Center is undergoing a $10 million makeover, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Daniel Fuller of Dallas’ Shop Companies, who owns the property, says the construction on the 64-year-old shopping center should last 6-8 months. After the restoration, Shop hopes to bring in new retail and restaurant tenants, but some tenants will remain. Ace Hardware and Tacos Y Mas have already signed new leases.
The retail center was built in the early 1950s as the neighborhood around it filled in with affordable middle class housing. A 1953 Dallas Morning News article describes the opening of the grocery store Wyatt’s, which was the largest in the chain at the time. It describes “magic carpet doors which open as customers approach them.”The store had “New Orleans-style” architecture as well. Shop Companies plans to keep the unique architecture and character.
The makeover includes the restoration of storefront canopies, lighting and signage upgrades, a reworking of the central plaza, including planting 60 new ornamental and shade trees. There is no word on whether the redesign will endanger any existing trees as was the case at Casa Linda Plaza recently, but we will update if so.
Anyone who compulsively checks realtor websites knows that gentrification and house flipping is making its steady march east of White Rock Lake, and the makeover of Casa View is another sign of the process.
