This Veteran’s Day, two East Dallas-based veterans are aiming to raise $10,000 for Carry the Load, a non-profit whose mission is to provide an active way to honor and remember the nation’s military, veterans, first responders and their families. CrossFit Dallas Central will host an event called Carry it Anywhere, a 12-hour long event in which participants will exercise using rowing, biking and skiing equipment with the goal to log one million meters.

The event is spearheaded by CrossFit Dallas Central owner Spencer Nix and veteran Cody Bandars, who served seven years in the Navy as a SEAL. The two created an event as a way to show gratitude to veterans.

“As an organization, [Carry the Load] kind of asked all of our ambassadors, ‘How can we thank a veteran for their service?,’” Bandars says, “And one of the common threads that came back from our veteran ambassadors was ‘You can always say thank you for your service, but if you want it to mean something, put forth some action.’”

Although CrossFit Dallas Central is a members-only gym, this will be the first time it will be open to the public. For social distancing purposes, registration is open on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Staff members will check participants’ temperatures as they enter the facility and participants will be properly distanced throughout the 9,000-square foot facility.

“I think everybody feels how difficult this has been…I think Memorial Day and Veterans Day are some of the best opportunities we have to think about others besides ourselves,” says Nix. “And what we found over the years is that they are also an amazing way to bring people together.”

Carry it Anywhere kicks off at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11. CrossFit Dallas Central is located at 1213 N. Washington Ave., Dallas.
