First-grade teacher Rogelio Garcia got a big surprise Wednesday morning. The Milken Family Foundation presented him with a check for $25,000 at a morning assembly.

The James B. Bonham Elementary School teacher received the cash award for dedication to students, involving parents in the school and leadership.

Garcia is key in the success of the school’s dual language program, says principal Sandra Fernandez. Since 1987, the Milken foundation has rewarded 2,500 teacher with more than $62 million.

Garcia can spend the $25,000 however he wants, and the Texas Rangers fan says he plans to attend the World Series.
