Tim Rogers had a hangover. That’s partly why he decided two years ago to start riding his bike to work every morning.

He also thinks it makes him hip. He says the 21-mile round trip from his house on the east side of White Rock Lake to downtown is a testament to his coolness.

It all started when the D Magazine editor left his car at an Uptown bar out of “an abundance of caution.” The next morning, he hopped on his old $100 bike and hit the Santa Fe Trail to retrieve his abandoned vehicle.

The editor wrote in an article for D Magazine that the fresh morning air inspired the idea, and it wasn’t long before he was riding the trail on a new set of wheels — a $2,200 set of wheels.

Rogers‘ commute features several East Dallas landmarks, including White Rock Lake filled with early morning rowers, the Tenison Highlands putting green, the Lakewood Country Club and Woodrow Wilson High School.

Since deciding to cycle to work, he’s ridden 1,617 commuting miles, experienced numerous health benefits and saved on gas and parking costs. Does that make him the neighborhood’s best resident? He likes to think so.
