Matt Wood is a Junius Heights resident and local attorney who will be seeking to unseat District 14 representative Philip Kingston in the May 6 city council race.
“It’s time to replace the negativity and contentiousness that has permeated the political process with positive action,” Wood said in a statement. “Our district represents the heart of Dallas, and we deserve a proactive, problem-solving and productive leader at City Hall.”
Wood has lived in our neighborhood for 20 years, raising his 13-year-old twins and volunteering his time coaching local youth sports. He’s been active at Lipscomb and Woodrow Wilson schools, and is on the Junius Heights Historic District board. Kearney Crowley will serve as his campaign treasurer.
Kingston had a race on his hands when he first sought the District 14 seat in 2013, beating attorney Bobby Abtahi in a run-off election. But in 2015, he ran unopposed.
The city council filing deadline is 5 p.m. today, and the two East Dallas candidates will see competition from downtown resident Kim Welch (see more on Welch here). Seeming pranksters, and 20-something Town Hill Lane roommates Adam Fullerton and Austin Guttery, have pulled out of the race.
District 14 is one of the oddest in the city, geographically speaking, since it spans the M Streets to Turtle Creek to Uptown.
