ASI Gymnastics announced Friday that construction had begun on the space in the southeast end of the Hillside Village Shopping Center at the corner of Mockingbird and Abrams, according to a news release.

The 20,000-square-foot gym is scheduled to open in May 2019. It will replace the Lake Highlands location at Forest and Greenville.

Students can still enroll and begin classes at Lake Highlands until they can be transferred to Lakewood when the space opens. The lease for the old location will not be renewed, spokeswoman Tiffany Warren said.

With more than 75 percent of member families living 15 minutes from the new location, the move is intended to attract new clients and make serving both communities more convenient, the release states.

“Lakewood and surrounding neighborhoods are demanding more and more family-oriented businesses,” ASI Gymnastics CEO David Holley said in a statement. “My wife and I live on White Rock Lake, so this is personal.”

The center’s Lakewood location will fill a portion of the Albertsons that has been closed since 2016. Property owner Northwood Retail is partitioning the 55,400-square-foot space for other tenants, which have not yet been announced.

Since 1991, ASI Gymnastics has offered gymnastics, tumbling and trampoline lessons at 10 locations in Dallas and Houston, according to the center’s website. It also organizes birthday parties, after-school care and summer camps.
