The 2,232-square-foot space is the old White Rock Community Chapel. And because of the historic nature of the site, the company is paying close attention to details — lighting, décor and artwork, for example — and taking its time to do the work well.

Bill Schaffler, the president of Ascension Coffee, says there have been delays in the construction process because of supply chain issues. Windows and doors in particular have been hard to get. So right now, he says, the company is shooting for an opening this December or January 2023.

“This is going to be our most elaborate Ascension in terms of the finishes and the uniqueness of the building, being an 80-year-old chapel,” Schaffler says. “We’re making sure that we’re going to treat it the way we think it should be treated.”

The location, neighboring Dallas Fire-Rescue Station No. 31, is very close to Casa Linda Plaza. Schaffler says the company is excited to be in our neighborhood and had been trying to find a location in East Dallas for years.

At the Garland Road store, the seventh for Ascension, there will be a large patio, shaded by oak trees. And the store will stay open until around 9 p.m. to allow customers to enjoy the “golden hour menu,” which includes small plates, shareable dishes and a wine list. Weekend brunch will also be served.
