Two groups that support arts programming in our neighborhood and beyond received grants to continue their work during the coronavirus pandemic.
The East-Dallas based, nonprofit publishing house, Deep Vellum Publishing, received $50,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts. Deep Vellum was one of 846 recipients out of 3,100 applicants. It will use the money to continue its statewide emergency fund to help authors, translators, designers and its staff experiencing financial insecurity because of the virus.
Shakespeare Dallas was one of 40 national arts organizations to receive a $25,000 Shakespeare in American Communities grant from Arts Midwest to be used for in-person or virtual performances.
Shakespeare Dallas canceled its summer performances of Shakespeare in the Park at the Samuell-Grand Amphitheater because of the coronavirus but plans to return in September with “Romeo and Juliet.” The shows will be recorded and streamed to classrooms that may not have access to cultural performances because of restrictions on field trips. Some students may attend in-person matinees.
The money will also be used to expand virtual programs, such as “Will on the Web.” More than 2,000 students participated in the learning blocks that cover the plot, history, analysis and performance of six Shakespeare plays.
