Just received a copy of an email from city of Dallas secretary Deborah Watkins to Angela Hunt concerning the "missing" campaign filing documents for TrinityVote, which briefly became a big deal (at least in the Morning News) before the mayoral election. At the time, according to Watkins, both Trinity groups (for and against the petition drive) had failed to file the appropriate organizational paperwork with the city. The anti group said it didn’t need to file anything; the city said otherwise. Hunt said her group had filed the appropriate paperwork; the city said otherwise. Now, Watkins says to Hunt: "Councilmember Hunt, the staff and I have stayed late most night searching to find the appointment of campaign treasurer for Trinity Vote which was originally filed in this office on Tuesday, January 30, 2007. Well, I found it tonight and I will send a letter of apology to the Trinity Vote Committee the first thing tomorrow. Please accept my apology for the oversight of this office. We have had a pretty good success rate in accepting and maintaining documents for the City of Dallas, but this slipped through the cracks. Again, I apologize." Score one for Watkins, who did the right thing, sourced the problem and came clean when it was her responsibility. Score another for Hunt, who did things the right way the first time, didn’t make a huge public stink and point fingers when the city screwed up, and hopefully will just get on with the job of getting enough signatures on her petitions. No news on whether the anti-Trinity petition people have done anything about their filing status yet.
