The Dallas City Council will decide Wednesday whether to renew the Aldredge House’s specific-use permit, which was amended three years ago as a compromise between preservationists and neighbors who complained about the venue’s late-night events.
Under current restrictions, the Aldredge House at 5500 Swiss Ave. can operate as a house museum, meeting space and fundraising site within a Planned Development District. The specific-use permit also allows the house to open 36 times per year for events from 5-10 p.m. That’s three nonconsecutive events each month.
City Council staff and the City Plan Commission recommend renewing the three-year permit, which would expire in January 2024.
Council members will hear public comments, but speakers must register by 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The Aldredge House, built in 1917, has been under the ownership of the Dallas County Medical Society Alliance for roughly 50 years. The Aldredge family gifted the home to the alliance in 1973 and tasked it with preserving the historic house.
It raised maintenance funds by operating as an event venue, but late-night weddings with boozy receptions, loud music and fireworks rankled some neighbors and caused complaints. In 2018, the alliance and neighborhood opposition agreed to the current restrictions.
