Okrapalooza, now in its 7th year, is the city’s first and only okra cook off. You can taste all of the dishes prepared by local celebrity chefs vying for votes. Tickets are $45, the proceeds of which go toward Promise of Peace Gardens, a group works to transform vacant spaces into gardens and teach children and families how to grow food. Okrapalooza will be held on Sept. 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Lot on 7530 E. Grand.
The first-ever stand up comedy show at Union Coffee will feature Paul Varghese of Last Comic Standing fame. Varghese and some area comedians will take the stage at the Dyer coffee shop on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10.
Juliette Fowler Communities is hosting an open house and celebrating Grandparent’s Day on Sept. 11 from 1-5 p.m. Attendees can explore Fowler, see the Ebby House, enjoy Grandparent’s Day activities and refreshments.  A special worship service will take place at 3 p.m. to honor the retirement of Rev. Kim Clowe and welcome Rev. Sara Beckham. The event is free.Â
Echo Theatre’s season 19 opening is Thursday, Sept. 9 at the Bath House Cultural Center. The company is starting the season with the 1983Â Pulitzer Prize winning drama, ” ‘night Mother.” The play will run until Sept. 24. Tickets start at $10.
Learn the basics of gardening at the Lakewood Public Library on Sept. 10. This class will — of course — include a few book readings and participants will plant flowers in front of the library after the course. The class starts at 2 p.m.
You can catch the Cowboy’s game this Sunday at the Granda Theater as they take on the Giants. Doors open at 2:25 p.m. and the event is free.
