After months of grueling practice and a DISD mock trial competition that started with 14 schools, Woodrow Wilson High School and Skyline High School will compete Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the downtown George Allen courthouse, 600 Commerce (it’s the big white courthouse across the street from Old Red) to determine the DISD champion. By finishing as the top two DISD teams, both also qualified for the state tournament, to be held in early March in Dallas. Woodrow’s team is coached by neighborhood attorneys Mike Buchanan and Joe Smith, along with Woodrow faculty adviser Catherine Pate; untold hours have been volunteered by these coaches to prepare the 12-person team. Our oldest son is a 10th grader and plaintiff attorney on the Woodrow team, so I clearly have a favorite in Tuesday’s match. Team members include Brenna Buchanan, Nicolette Cuerto, Sarah Delph, Sean Draper, Joe Marshall, John Matusiewicz, Nick Muston, Ashley Ramirez, Valerie Reynolds, Brian Tepera and Jack Wamre.
