Almost 600 stores nationwide will be divested by Kroger and Albertsons and sold to C&S Wholesale Grocers if their $24.6 billion merger closes.
26 of those stores are in DFW.
The merger was first announced in Oct. of 2022 and both companies have been trying to acquire regulatory approval ever since. In just over a month, both companies will go to court in Portland with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) where approval of the merger will be decided.
Both companies experienced problems with their attempts for regulatory approval, with the FTC expressing concerns that the merger would reduce competition and may affect the quality of their products as a result of not competing with one another.
In response to the regulators’ concerns, Albertsons and Kroger have both declared it would invest $1 billion to raise employee pay and $500 million to lower prices.
