Cameron McElhenie won a $2,000 award given by Ford Motor Company Fund and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) National Educational Service Center. The scholarship has been given to more than 200,000 students in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Latin America and Europe since it was created in 2012.

The Ford Motor Company Fund matched the amount invested by North Texas Ford dealers to award $500,000 in scholarships to 250 students from 146 schools in our region. Each student who won participated in the “What Drives Your Dreams” essay contest.

McElhenie and the other recipients, including one other Woodrow student, were honored in a virtual ceremony, where Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was among the featured speakers.

During his time at Woodrow, McElhenie was on the swim team for his first two years and was the captain his sophomore year. He also played the alto saxophone and was the section leader and captain in the band. McElhenie graduated magma cum laude as an international baccalaureate candidate and was the secretary of the National Honor Society as a junior and senior.

The Woodrow graduate plans to study international relations and global affairs at Boston University next fall. He will participate in the Navy ROTC program and hopes to lifeguard or teach swim lessons to help with expenses.
