The area is now zoned R-7.5(A), a single-family district. This zoning does not allow a public school by right.

Karl Crawley of Masterplan, which is representing DISD, said the school was built in the late 1950s, and the City of Dallas did not require zoning for public schools until 1989. So now that it’s being demolished and rebuilt, a zoning change is needed.

A planned development district will allow DISD to rebuild a new school on the same site.

This school is one of several in East Dallas slated for replacement. Progress is still being made on the Geneva Heights Elementary redesign.

The last community meeting about the Reilly Elementary redesign was held in November 2021. Architects presented neighbors two options for the exterior look of the school.
