Wildcats wowing the world: The Amend Real Estate Group has been ranked 38th in the nation in a survey of successful firms by Interior Magazine. John Thomas Amend ’67 is president and David Amend ’71 is co-owner. David’ s classmate Lou Lyne Alpert ’71 was recently featured on the front of the Dallas Morning News  “Today” section (in living color) and her company, Coyote Press, was profiled.

Barbara Soules Young ’58 has moved her shop, Bab’s Antiques, to the corner of Henderson and Richard (next to Emerald’s to Coconuts ). She anchors the east end of the hot Knox “urban village.” Anchoring the west end of the district is of course, still Weir’ s Furniture, run by Patsy Weir Moore ’51, her children Mark Moore ’76 and Amy Moore Fullerton ’82. Alton L. Hill ’62 is retiring as head coach of Lakeview Centennial High School in Garland. His brother is retired W.T. White head coach William “Harold” Hill ’52. Alton coached at Woodrow from the middle ’60s until 1980 under retired head Coach Ken Kimbrell. Today Alton is enjoying his two grandchildren and playing golf with his brother and Coach Kimbrell at Buffalo Creek. My favorite Coach Hill moment was at a pep rally we were having before the game with our hated rival, the Skyline High Institute of Technology. Coach took the stage and called Skyline, ” the 21 million dollar mistake located at the beginning of the rectum of Dallas, Pleasant Grove.” Unfortunately, we lost again (their enrollment was four times ours and they took many of our best players from J.L. Long).

Speaking of Long, did you see that the Buccaneers once again placed third in the regional Mathcounts Competition? St. Mark’ s was first and Franklin second.

Also recently retired is my superior at DeGolyer and MacNaughton, Guy H. Andrews ’52 (classmate of Harold Hill). Guy was invaluable to the Computer Service Division of the oil and gas consulting firm for more than 30 years. His son in law is Stephen Cromeens ’71, CEO of Cromeco, Inc. in San Antonio. The current Wildcat Cromeens are Stephen’ s brother Doug’ s ’69.

Ever since my comments a couple of years ago about how former AP English teacher Ann McSpadden helped inspire my admiration of Mark Twain, she has been sending me homework assignments from her travels all over the world. Her home base is the “other” Lakeshore Drive, not on our White Rock Riviera, but on the Gold Coast of Chicago. Anyway she writes from the Villa D’ Este in the Lakes region of northern Italy.

Your assignment: Did Samuel Clements obsess that his work took precedence over his family after tragedy struck? I didn’t look it up, but I believe he did. Now I better take the RAPIDO to Como and turn in my assignment on time. The consequences could be calamitous.
