Woodrow Wilson High School’s football team has a legendary history as the home of two Heisman Trophy winners (Tim Brown, class of ’84, and Davey O’Brein, class of ’35). But this past weekend the contemporary team added a new feather to their helmets when they won the Texas State 7 on 7 Association Division 1 qualifying tournament in Frisco, playing against teams all over the region.

The players now will face some of the best teams in Texas at the state tournament, set for June 30-July 1 in College Station.

“This is a first for Woodrow,” beams Booster Club President Shannon West.

The team, who will continue practice together during the summer before returning for regular league play next year, includes several juniors who have already been scouted for college.

Cade Fennegan, Travis West and Zacori Alexander were all three given offers at Abilene Christian University and Cade also at University of North Texas, Travis at West Point and Zacori at Montana State University and McNeese State,” West says.

She adds that she’s seen something special in this group of players.

They work to lift each other up physically and emotionally and if that ends in winning football games, then that is the byproduct of their commitment to one another. They really do hang out as a group, crossing all social, racial and economic boundaries,” West says. “They celebrate each other’s successes on Twitter and are always encouraging each other. They will help each other in the classroom with tutoring and talking to teachers. They work as a team and therefore go further than other teams have gone in the past.”Â
