We have a lot of impressive rowers around here. Not only did recent Woodrow Wilson High grad Eli Brown win in the Head of the Charles Regatta this weekend with the Brown University freshmen boat team, but also a group of Woodrow students traveled to Austin this past weekend and brought home four medals.

The Head of the Colorado (PumpkinHead Regatta) is held annually on the last Saturday of October. Austin Rowing Club has been hosting this regatta since the mid-1980’s and 2013 marks the 29th Annual PumpkinHead Regatta, according to a press release.

This 5,000 meter head race on Lady Bird Lake in Austin offers events for the following: junior, collegiate, open, adaptive and masters rowers; single kayaks, and Stand Up Paddle boards. This year the race drew 641 entries, 34 clubs, including rowers from 18 cities in 6 states and 2 countries.

East Dallas students train with White Rock Rowing Club and the team is comprised of Woodrow students as well as other students from East Dallas attending Bishop Lynch, Irma Rangel and Hillcrest High School.

The varsity boys walked away with two gold medals, the varsity girls took home a bronze medal, and the novice boys also won a bronze medal.

This week, the team will travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee to race in The Head of the Hooch, the second largest regatta in the world.
