The Woodrow Wilson High School Community Foundation raised $5,500 for its second annual grant program to give to schools in the Woodrow feeder pattern.
Funds can be used for any school or classroom project, regardless of subject area, from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. A $500 grant is reserved for an art project.
“When we built the program last year, we wanted to make it adaptable to any classroom,” board member Courtney Rogers said. “It’s unrestricted.”
In its inaugural year, the foundation raised $3,500 and received 17 applications totaling $30,000 in requests. It funded three projects at Lipscomb Elementary, Eduardo Mata Elementary and J.L. Long Middle School.
Lipscomb requested a robotics kit to expand its robotics club, Mata wanted flexible seating for students and J.L. Long needed basic science equipment for classrooms.
“It was heartwarming and heart-wrenching,” Rogers said. “I’m glad we have more money to give away this year.”
Applications are open until Nov. 1. A committee of 12 community leaders independent of the foundation choose the winners based on criteria, such as need, impact and equity. Winners will be announced by Dec. 1.
