The award-winning Woodrow Wilson High School marching band made its 2018 debut last night at The Star in Frisco during halftime while the football team was winning their season opener against the Frisco High School Raccoons 13-10.
But the band has been practicing with broken, beginner and imaginary instruments. NBCDFW reports that many of Woodrow’s 130 band members are marching with instruments that don’t play and are in need of repair, while others march without any instrument at all. Some play hand-me-down or loaner instruments from the feeder middle schools that are for beginners.
Increased numbers and budget constraints are the limiting factor for the best band in Dallas ISD, which we profiled last year.
Band booster Henda Salmeron (who wrote a book about her work changing legislation to help breast cancer victims) set up a this GoFundMe page to help raise money for the band, whose numbers have increased by 300 percent since 2012. In just two days, the fund raised over $16,000 of the desired $22,000.
