Woodrow Wilson High School alumna Stephanie Martin will compete against 112 of the nation’s best swimmers Friday, June 29, for a shot at joining the U.S. Olympic team.
Martin, 22, graduated from Woodrow in 2008 and accepted a five-year scholarship to Western Kentucky University, where last year, she set the school record for the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:14.66. She qualified for the trials in November.
Martin just completed a degree in kinesiology, with a minor in nutrition. She plans to stay on at Western Kentucky for a graduate degree in physical therapy, although she’s no longer eligible to compete in the NCAA. In high school, Martin went to the state swim meet all four years, and she won the gold medal at state in the 200-meter breaststroke as a senior.
Stephanie’s mom, Marianne Martin, says she is flying to the trials in Omaha to watch her daughter swim Friday.
“I can’t even believe it,” she says. “I have to keep pinching myself.”
