The Wildcats once again placed high in the Dallas Morning News All-Sports Awards. Of 50 Class 4A north Texas high schools, Woodrow tied for sixth place with Lancaster, with 65.5 points.
District 12-4A is especially competitive, Rival W.T. White finished six points ahead of the Wildcats, and Hillcrest finished six points ahead of the Wildcats, and Hillcrest finished 7.5 points behind. Woodrow’s total score was higher than all Mesquite and Garland schools, and 21.25 points higher than nearby 5A rival Lake Highlands.
Of all 105 4A and 5A schools, Woodrow’s score placed 17th.
Strong showings in team tennis, volleyball, boy’s and girl’s cross country, boy’s and girl’s swimming, boy’s soccer, boy’s golf and baseball propelled the school to its seventh consecutive top 10 finish.
World Wide Woodrow
Betty Parrett, Spanish teacher at Woodrow since the ‘60s, recently returned from Europe. She led a group of students on a two-week tour that included London, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Windsor Castle and Runnymede; Gallic gallivanting in Paris, Versailles and Chartes; and an Iberian itinerary of Madrid, Toledo and Segovia.
Tourists included Greg Boortz, Jennifer Burlew, Jeanette Gonzales, Meredith Holmes, Zach Redington, Ward Richmond, Sharyn Tudor, Liz Vint and Mavis Webb.
I think Miss Parrett’s last tour was to Eastern Europe and Russia. Although she’s a seasoned traveler, she only took my class to the Travelodge in San Antonio. But seeing her slides of Spain in class was nice.

Despite its newly stated intention to concentrate only on the Park Cities and North Dallas, the July D Magazine featured several Woodrow players.
Doug Swanson ’71 was profiled for his critically-acclaimed novels, “Big Town” and “Dreamboat”. The Dallas Morning News writer wrote a week-long series about Woodrow nearly 10 years ago.
Another story featured former Woodrow parents Judge Jerry Buchmeyer and Robert Brittingham, who have teamed up to bring a $6 million Environmental Education Center to the Dallas Public Schools.
Brittingham is on the Texas Monthly list of the 100 richest Texans. In June, Texas Monthly also profiled Carroll Shelby ’40. (We talked about Carroll in February.)
Brittingham’s son, Jack ’76, is masterminding a large development, Twin Creeks, off Central Expressway west of Allen. When the Brittinghams built the family home on White Rock in the late ‘60s, some speculated that it must be a church.
Judge Buchmeyer’s daughter, Pam Buchmeyer Aymond ’78, is producing a movie, “GayTV, The Movie – All Gay, All the Time”, with her little brother John Paul. An attorney as well, Pam also wrote for Dallas Child, until they discovered the title of her future flick.
Pam’s husband, Rex ’70, reports that his class reunion has been moved to October to coincide with Homecoming. More on that later.
Trivia Pursuit – The Woodrow Edition
The Woodrow trivia contest has been extended another month, until the Crusaders are available in the school library when school opens.
