If you know anything about competitive rowing, a.k.a. crew, you know it’s a sport most common on the coasts, from the waterways of Connecticut to the San Francisco Bay. Even though it’s far less common in Texas, our neighborhood has two different clubs that earned a place the 2017 US Rowing Youth National Championships, set for next month in Sarasota, Fla.
Dallas United Crew, which includes team members from Woodrow Wilson and Bryan Adams high school, and White Rock Rowing, which includes several Woodrow and Lakehill Preparatory rowers, will both send boats to the elite competition to face off against the best youth crew teams in the country.
“Truly a great accomplishment by the athletes and coaches,” says Sue Ellen Chambers of White Rock Rowing. “The coaching staff has made a remarkable difference in just one year. I can’t wait to see what happens next year.”
To get to the finals, both teams first scored a slew of gold, silver and bronze medals at the Central Youth Championships, which took place May 6-7 on the Oklahoma River. Of the 18 teams battling it out on the water, Dallas United came in third in total points, while White Rock was ninth (see total number of points, medals etc.).
“Both our men’s team got first place in regionals and our girl’s team got silver,” beamed Tammy Adams of Dallas United Crew.
