Show your support for DPD and attend Lakewood Trail’s check presentation ceremony at the northeast substation on Northwest Highway. A few weeks ago some philanthropic kids from the neighborhood sold lemonade and T-shirts to support the police after the July 7 ambush. They ended up raising $6,000 and will donate the check to the police on Thursday, Aug. 18 at 4 p.m. Anyone who bought a shirt is asked to wear it to the ceremony.

The Naked Stage returns to Union, the nonprofit coffee shop tucked away on 5622 Dyer. This week the storytelling event features spoken word accounts about drafting, so expect tales of military campaigns, sporting events and engineering marvels. The free event begins at 8 p.m. on Aug. 19.

Local veterinarian Dr. Childers will visit the Lakewood Branch Library with a cat and dog to teach everyone about working with animals. He will bring instruments and tools that real vets use. Visit the cool interiors of White Rock Lake’s Bath House Cultural Center for a Pegasus Theater production of The Coarse Actor Rises, a spoof of Michael Green’s book, The Art of Coarse Acting. You’ll be in for an evening of mistakes, miscues, and mayhem, goofs, gaffes, and guffaws, with all the actors forging ahead, convinced the audience won’t notice a thing. Say promoters, “It’s a celebration of inept but terribly earnest theatre at its finest.” Tickets run $10-$25. Shows are at 8 p.m. with matinees at 3 p.m. Visit the page for schedules and tickets.

The Dallas Arboretum knows you and you family don’t really want to be outdoors for extended periods this time of year unless you’re inside a cool body of water, which is why they offer Dollar Days all August, which makes the idea slightly more appealing. During no other month can you enjoy the arboretum’s fully bloomed beauty for such a bargain. Even sizzling temps don’t change the fact that it’s “one of the world’s most breathtaking gardens,” right? Visit dallasarboretum.org for details. The park is located at 8525 Garland Rd. Parking is still $5, by the way.
