Victor H. Hexter Elementary in East Dallas won a national grant from The Heart of America Foundation with the support of Target, and last week the school met with representatives of each organization to reveal a newly renovated library. Plus, retired Major League Baseball star Michael Young joined the festivities as a surprise guest.
With a goal of ensuring reading proficiency by the end of third grade, these organizations spent more $250,000 on renovations. Updates included the purchase of 2,000 new books, new shelving, updated technology, furniture, carpet and seven new books for each Hexter student to take home over the summer.
The library will “function as the hub of research, reading and learning” by making those things accessible to students, parents and community members,” according to an email from Hexter.
