Cantina Laredo

Every couple of weeks, I get an email from a neighbor wondering about the construction on the old Cantina Laredo spot. It seems everyone wants to know: What’s going in there?

For a long time we heard rumors that it would be retail — maybe a boutique? Then the words “pet store” began making the rounds.

Finally, Hollywood Feed confirmed it’s opening in that space.

Hollywood Feed is a groomer/pet store combo based in Memphis. It plans to open 10 stores in Dallas, according to a post by the Memphis Business Journal. The first two locations were opened earlier this year, one on Lover’s Lane and one on Preston Road.

A spokeswoman with Hollywood Feeds says she doesn’t know at this point when the location at Abrams will open, but she said she’ll be able to provide more information in a week or two. However, she did confirm that Hollywood Feed is indeed opening in that location, once the construction is complete.

Hollywood Feeds began as a neighborhood feed store in Memphis, according to the website. Although it has expanded to several southern states, they still focus on being a “neighborhood provider of the best natural and holistic pet products.”

Tree downAlso, if you’ve driven by the construction in the past couple of days, you might’ve noticed the tree out front has been chopped down.

Apparently, the roots are messing with the sidewalk, so the tree had to go.

Phil Erwin, with sustainable development and construction, says he “approved the tree removal after reviewing the scope of work to be conducted with the property owner and after consulting with the City Forester, Karen Woodard.

“We determined they could not adequately replace the sidewalk without causing considerable damage to the root structure of the tree. The authorization was given on the basis of public safety to minimize trip hazard at the entry of the facility.”

Erwin says the property owner plans to replace landscaping, although he probably won’t do so with a large tree species, due to the likelihood that he’d have to remove it in the future.
