Preservation Dallas honored three people last month for their work in the preservation of historical architecture.

Susan Mead received the Griffon Award for championing intown housing development and advocating historic preservation. Mead’s projects include the protection and enhancement of Munger Place Historic District and the Melrose Hotel. She was the first executive director of Preservation Dallas and is a partner in charge of Fullbright & Jaworski’s Land Use Team.

Bennett Miller of Bennett Miller Co. received the Keystone Award for his innovative adaptive reuse ventures. Since 1983, Bennett has converted a number of older commercial and industrial buildings into loft-studios and apartments.

Brent Byers of Corgan Associates Architects received the Lantern Award for helping to design the vision for intown housing. Byers has committed the majority of his professional career to city development and revitalization. He has been an architectural design leader for such projects as City Hall, the West End, Deep Ellum, Dallas City Center, Fair Park and the Dallas Farmer’s Market redevelopment.

TOUR VISITS HOMES WITH WATER-WISE LANDSCAPES: Dallas Water Utilities and Dallas Public Works and Transportation Department are sponsoring the second annual free public Xeriscape Tour June 8 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Eleven sites, including the Xeriscape Demonstration Garden at White Rock Pump Station (2900 White Rock Road), are on the tour. Tour maps will be available at this garden. Xeriscapes are landscapes that conserve water pollution. Call 670-4022 for information.

JPI BUILDS NEW GASTON APARTMENTS: JPI is moving in the first residents of its new 480-unit complex at Jefferson and Gaston Yard, the first multifamily development Downtown in decades. JPI owns 12 other developments in the Dallas area and was currently named the nation’s number one multifamily builder in Builder magazine’s annual list of the 100 largest builders in the country. REALTORS RECEIVE HISTORIC DESIGNATION: Several neighborhood Realtors recently received Historic House Specialist designation after completing a seminar sponsored by Preservation Dallas.
