On Friday, Dec. 6, the Lakewood Business Association presents the 11th annual Light Up Lakewood. The event will be held from 6-9 p.m. The tree lighting is at 7 p.m. There also will be activities such as a petting zoo, face painting, an obstacle course and performances by the Woodrow Wilson Variations choir and the Woodrow Wilson band. The event will be help in Lakewood Shopping Center parking lot at Gaston and Abrams, and it’s free.

Starting Dec. 4 and continuing through the 7th, Skillman Southwestern Library Friends is selling more than 4,000 gently used, donated books, CDs, movies, magazines, cards and more. On Dec. 4, the sale is from noon-7:45 p.m. On Dec. 5, 6, and 7, the sale is from 10 a.m.-5:45 p.m. Most items are 50 cents to $2. Everything is half-priced on Saturday. On Thursday, Dec. 5, the Woodrow Wilson “Variations” Holiday Show starts at 7 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Cathedral Great Hall, at 5100 Ross Avenue. Then the Dallas Black Dance Theater II and the Allegro Performing Ensemble of Dallas Black Dance Academy will perform a mixture of ballet, modern, jazz and ethnic works at 8 p.m. Go to cathedralartsdallas.org for more, or call 214.887.6552. Screen Shot 2013-12-04 at 6.24.40 PMHere’s an event for the sweet-tooths of the neighborhood: “Christmas lights, Chocolate sips” tours presented by Dallas by Chocolate through Dec. 31. “Discover Dallas’ premier local chocolatiers, bakeries, cheesemakers and other artisanal specialty shops with Dallas by Chocolate and Dallas Bites! Food tours. Climb aboard our private bus to visit 4-5 different venues in about 3.25 hours (or longer, depending on the tour),” the website says. Many of the tours start outside our neighborhood, but a few start right here in East Dallas. You can view the schedule online.

The fifth annual White Rock Local Market Holiday Extravaganza is this Saturday, Dec. 7 at Lakeside Baptist Church on Garland Road.  Showcasing the best artists, farmers and food artisans, the market is a one stop shop for holiday gift-giving. (And who doesn’t love that?) From 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., guests can enjoy live music from Dave Burris Group, a cakewalk, raffle, food trucks including The Guava Tree and The Little Greek Food Truck and oodles of local vendors.

DWF-FFORTNIGHT-SKETCH-newWEBThis weekend, Dec. 5 through 8, The Dallas Woman’s Forum will celebrate the holidays with A French Fort Night: Holiday Celebration. The 1904 Alexander Mansion will be transformed to reflect Christmas Eve in the foothills of the Alps before World War I, when a young French girl brings home her American fiancé to meet her family and celebrate the Réveillon Dinner. Tours of the Mansion will be offered every half hour; there will be favorite vendors and new ones offering items for sale in the upstairs Holiday Boutique; and lunch will be served each day in the Bistro Café. Baked goodies will be available for sale in the Pastry Shop. Admission to the Tour and Boutique is $10 for adults; $5 for children. Reservations for the Bistro Café are $15.
