All it took was a worldwide pandemic for people to realize the importance of teachers in their children’s lives. There’s no better time for neighbors to express their gratitude than during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4-8.

Lipscomb Elementary students were the first to let teachers know just how much they were missed in a thank-you video set to Rachel Platten’s “Better Place.” Now, Alex Sanger Elementary is throwing a teacher appreciation parade for its educations.

The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at White Rock United Methodist Church, 1450 Old Gate Lane.

Teachers will park while students drive past in their cars. DELEON PROVISIONS and its vintage food truck “Ellie” will be on hand to pass out teacher meals with other goodies provided by the PTA and students.

These businesses also want to help celebrate. Here’s where teachers can get free meals and deals with a teacher ID card:

  • Michaels, get 20 percent off every purchase.
  • Half Price Books, get 10 percent off year-round by signing up for an Educator Discount Card.
  • Sonic, get a large drink or slush with a purchase ordered on the app. Just use the code TEACHERS.
  • Einstein Bros. Bagels, get 20 percent off an eGift Card you can send to a teacher to say thanks.
